big l.a. parade/show spectacle early to mid 20th century?

hi does anybody know the name of the some what famous parade/carnival type show that happaned i think in hollywood in the early to mid 20th century i.e. 20's-50's?, i remember steven spilberg talking about it as it inspired him when he saw it. i dont know if it was to do with a movie but there were giant roman pillars etc, anybody have any ideas wht i mean?
