Depends on what language you want to study. As few secondary education establishments teach Japanese, for example, the Dons know that, so would look for linguistic ability elsewhere.

Some universities do courses in Beginner's French/German/Etc. Although I think you might have to do another degree with it.

However, some uni's are only bothered with GCSE grades to carry onto uni. I know my university does (Kent). For example, I got in with my A-Level in French. But they also accepted anyone who just got an A at GCSE. You just follow slightly different modules in the first year to get to the same level.
