I'm ancient, but when I did 'A' levels, it covered the same ground, except that, when writing an essay or answering an exam question you had to take a stand point and be able to support your opinion. Things may have changed in the past 40 years. I remember that the word I used most frequently was 'thus'. Or maybe the Latin QED - Quod erat demonstrandum ' which will be proved' in the following. Many of my school colleagues said 'QED' meant 'Quod erat desperandum', meaning they didn't really know the answer.
