Question for someone who knows both British and American politics ?

Do American and British government party's have an equal in the opposite country ?

What I mean is, are the Labour party equal to say, the Democratic party and are the Republican and Conservative the same ?

Roughly that is the case. The Conservative Party (the Tories) are roughly equivalent to the Republican Party, but the Tories are probably more liberal than the GOP. The Democrats are roughly equal to the more liberal party (Labour). Labour has gone from being a socialist party and moved more towards the center (they call it 'new' Labour). There's also a major third party the Liberal-Democrats, which are actually more to the left than Labour or the Democrats, more like the Green Party. Britain also has several other smaller parties, like the Ulster Unionists, Sinn Fein (Irish Nationalists-Republicans), Scottish and Welsh Nationalists, the BNP (British National Party-a far right racist party), etc.
