...the uk while driving ? is it simply a phone with a loudspeaker ?
or does it have to have something else ?
how can it be literally hands free ? does it need voice recognition ?

Bluetooth headset is the way to go. Touch your phone while you are driving in any shape or form and you will get done.
Putting make-up on when driving and you will get done. Having a shave while driving and you will get done. Smoking while you are driving and you will get done. Basically, leave it all alone!!

an in-ear piece is fine. They just don't want your hand holding the phone up to your ear.

You can drive with a bluetooth handsfree kit legally in britain - if that is loudspeaker, or an in-ear piece - that is perfectly fine. As soon as you introduce wires or just hold the phone itself it becomes illegal
