I tried copying/transferring a load of photos via usb (hardware was removed safely) from my Nokia phone to my PC but they just seemed to have vanished, on both the phone and PC?
any ideas where they could be?

Try to connect again and transfer photos make sure to note the folder on which your photos will be stored this time normally the default folder for pic is c:/documents and settings/my pictures. Once pictures have successfully stored in your pc try to open the folder on which they have been saved.
