I think the idea is that you customise the page with the content that you want to see, if you leave it as default then you can hardly complain if yahoo doesn't update it every 5 mins or however long you think it should be, by leaving it to them it is you who is being lazy. You can add feeds from the BBC or any of the networks, msn, newspapers, reuters, even foreign sources so be adventurous and then you will have all the news you want.
It's appalling how yahoo uses the same news story 4 times on 1 web page...
