VAT and NET help please?

without using a calculator could someone please tell me an easy way of working out net and working out vat using 17.5%

example: amount vat net
3055 ? ?

how did you work out the net figure and vat figure.

Also when not using calculator....really easy way of VAT calculation please, thank you.
Have final exam in dec inwhich we are not allowed to use calculators at all!

Sorry luvvy but there is no easy way without a calculater.

If 3,055 is your net amount though the total VAT on that would be £534.62 so your gross total would be £3589.62

If £3055 is your gross amount the VAT content would be £455 and net amount £2600

It's difficult without a calculator.

Why don't you want to use one? You can use excel like a calculator if you don't have one.

Ah I see: you would need to do the calcs long hand then:

3055 x 17.5/100 = VAT amount (if orig is net) then add the two figures together to give the gross amount.
or
3055 x 40/47 = Net of VAT amount, and then minus the two figures to give the VAT element.
