hi majka
there are many so-called vista lookalikes however as you say the majority of them are either no good or riddled with spyware and malware
however instead of downloading a single program that changes important system files and can damage your os,why not download a few different programs with each doing a specific task that windows vista does
1) 3d window flip : this is probally the most interesting of all vista,s features and this can be done with windows xp using a excellent program called " top-desk"(http://www.otakusoftware.com/topdesk/),and like windows vista,s flip feature this can do the same and flip in 3d as many windows as you have opened
2) windows search...up to a few days ago i would of recommended the windows live search that sits in your taskbar however i recently found a excellent program called "Everything 1.1.4.301" from http://www.download.com/Everything/3000-2379_4-10890746.html?tag=contentMain;contentBody&cdlPid=1 0890745,and just like the vista search function this will find files on your pc in seconds if not instanly, and can scan up to 1 million files in just 1 minute
3)aeroglass : this is the hardest of all features to emulate in windows xp however the excellent program "WindowBlinds" can do a sterling job of this and will give you those aero-glass windows unique to vista
4)dream scenes : this feature was unique to only "window vista ultimate",however theres actually a way you can run a "animated" desktop in windows xp,and to do this follow these instructions :
1. Download and install VLC Player for Windows(http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-windows.html)
2. Run VLC Media Player, go to Settings -> Preferences, expand Interface and click on wxWidgets. In the bottom right corner of “wxWidgets interface module” window, click on “Advanced options” to show advanced settings. Then uncheck the Taskbar check box in order to remove VLC Player title from the taskbar while the program is running. Check Systray icon if you want to enable Systray (system tray or notification area) icon instead.
3. Next, expand Video -> Output Modules and then select Direct X. In bottom right corner of DirectX Video Output window, check the Advanced Options check box in order to see all the settings available.
4. Check and tick the “Enable wallpaper mode” check box.
5. Then, select Playlist and then check or tick the Repeat current item checkbox.
6. Press “Save” button when done.
7. Open and play any video that you would like to set as motion wallpaper in VLC Media Player.
8. If the video hasn’t yet been set as desktop background, right click on the video and click on “Wallpaper”.
9. The video or movie will be set as if it’s DreamScene motion desktop background wallpaper.
this however disables any right click menu you may have however the features such as nvidia control panel and display properties can be accessed from the taskbar and control panel
note: all these features much like windows vista uses alot more memory than normal,so it may be a idea to either add another 512mb of ram to help run these new features and this additional memory will be there for you when you decide to upgrade to windows vista proper
i hope this helps, however any problems let me know
good luck majka !
