Default windows vista updates trustworthy?

I had this problem since I built my pc a few Months ago where every 5 or less minutes the computer itself stuttered. I mean like it suffered a frame rate drop and it didn't matter whether I was listening to music, on the net or playing games. After going through all my drivers in control panel and searching for automatic updates, I finally just assumed it was just faulty hardware and started budgeting for upgrades.

Then, last night I came across some software that said it would look for updated drivers for my pc. I installed it and it turned out to be one of those "oh, hey, you need updates, but you'll have to pay to get 'em". Foolishly it told me all the updates I need so I just went and got them on the net. Now my pc is running like a dream, and so it leaves me with this question: Why couldn't windows vista find these obviously essential updates for me? Anyone have any ideas?

Like many of Microsoft's efforts, Vista is flawed and bug ridden, hence the slow adoption rate.

There is nothing wrong with vista only the peole who use it wrong. I have been with vista for a year and it,s doing fine. All updates from vista are genuine as long as your vista programme is ,and not a pirated version. You can use the automatic update s from vista and they will download as they arrive, what could be easier. And all updates are free.
