I have a computer that has problems with the windows XP Home O/S.?
XP Home. I want to save my information that is on the HDD. I have done a recover but it still will not let me log on to Windows.
Can I keep my files and programs and reinstall windows?
just reinstalling Xp wont work... the errors remain as your only overwriting.. not reinstalling.
theres two ways to do this;
1 get another hard drive, and connect it thru a USB port... anf transfer from A to B in safe mode. (press F8 at startup)
and the other way is to get a copy of LINUX. (Linspire Xp2007) it boots off teh CD, and then you can use that to transfer your files, and then reformat the drive using XP disk.
I have had this happen to a laptop much worse than a desktop.
Nightmare's Solution is right on try using a live linux disc, there are many flavors. They boot linux off your cd-rom and let you run the linux os off the disk. You can access all your files on your hard drive. You will need something to transfer them onto another hard disk or a flash drive. That's your best bet. DistroWatch has Tons of linux variants, linux mint is really simple to use good luck,
if you re-instal windows you may lose all your data..you could however obtain a new hdd and install windows os then set you old drive as a slave and try to access the data that way.
yes u can reinstall windows with upgrade option do not use new installtion....another idea do not save data on the drive (partion) which has the windows files and system files
try to use a system restore may be it work
