Windows XP. no volume control icon, no sound.?

For some unknown reason the volume control icon in the task bar disappeared, and I have now found that I get no sound from the speakers. I also have no system sounds, going into the system it tells me that I have no sound device. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

update your drivers google some free drivers software that tells u which drivers are out of date and which ones are not

Your best bet is probably to try to reinstall the drivers. Something may have corrupted the files you have. If not, it might be your hardware, but I doubt it.
