I keep getting prompts for security downloads which relate to Windows XP SP3

which fail to install.? Are these updates essential? If they're not, how can I delete the updates and lose the prompt everytime I boot up (and also the yellow shield icon on my task bar)

Try to download the xp3 update manually and install it.
