It appears that XP was not installed properly on your computer. Here is the process in installing XP the right way on a Vista computer

the problem maybe that the laptop was built for Vista, and that the computer cant support XP properly, although I dont see why not. Another problem could be that because Vista is built differently to XP, that some of the stuff that Vista uses may still remain in your XP installation, ie XP is running with some files that Vista uses.
