Help - my dvd drive isnt reading dvds - atapi dvdrom 16x windows xp

cant get my dvd player to work on my computer - it wont play anything - i havent used it for a while. But i am stumpt why it doesnt work, as it was working fine before.

I have tried different dvds, games, cd's and cd cleaner but nothing. It doesnt seem to recognise there is a disc in the drive - and just brings up message: please insert disc???

Do i need a new driver? if so where can i get one from: its a atapi dvdrom 16x have you got a link?

This is not a driver problem it sounds like a bad cable connection to the motherboard or a faulty DVD Drive. Have you looked in device manager to see if it is correctly listed with no error messages.
And is it listed in my computer.
If it is showing in both cases then the drive is probably faulty (dirty or damaged head/laser not reading disk)

Are you sure nothing has been changed (like new HDD etc.)

DVD drive for a PC are dirt cheap now so try a new one or try swopping drives with a friend's computer.

If it is a laptop then it becomes a bit harder and may need to go to a qualified repairer
