Windows Vista problems?

first off, no stupid 'don't use vista' answers, this is a serious question and every time its asked you get that answer and its not funny. i need serious answers

I did a windows update which appeared to install fine, but since then I cannot shut down my pc (i have to turn it off by holding down the button) and when I go to do the restore, it goes 'preparing' and goes no further. also there is another update but i cant install that one either


can anyone help please?
