The latest Ubuntu disc comes with something called wubi (Windows Ubuntu Installer). Simply startup Vista and insert the CD once it's loaded. Wubi will start and will automatically create a dual-boot system from within Vista.

Now everytime you bootup it gives you a choice of which os to boot into. It's very good and easy to use. If you don't have the latest CD (8.10 onwards), then you can download it from www.wubi-installer.org. It's open-source and officially supported by Canonical.
