linux os and backup files on pen drive?

i have a 8gb pen drive and i would like to install pclinuxos on there, i know this can be done. However is it possible to keep my college work/employee work on my pen drive and also anyother files i need without mucking anything up. Would the best way to do this is by partitioning the pen drive? Please help.
