Someone please help me on installing programs on linux (trying to install...

...google earth) ? I'm really really new to linux and I haven't a clue on how to install programs. I here I'm meant to enter some sort of line into a terminal but I just don't understand, I have google earth installer on my desktop at the moment. I'm using Yellow Dog Linux version 6 if it helps at all.
I don't need to use WINE because Im wanting to install a program that is ment for linux and I don't want any stupid sites that don't help at all.
Thanks for the great answer Sky Walker, I got all this to work and then the Terminal says "Uncompressing" (followed by loads of numbers) then it just stops, is there anything else I need to do?

If its a "GoogleEarthLinux.bin" (Linux version) file on your Desktop, then open a terminal and type this (exactly, take care of uppercase and lowercase letters and spaces) :


cd ~/Desktop (hit enter)

chmod a+x GoogleEarthLinux.bin (hit enter)

./GoogleEarthLinux.bin [its dot followed by a /]


If the second command says anything about permissions, then just add the word 'sudo' before
the command....like sudo chmod a+...
