connect to the internet using linux?

My talk talk connection cd can't be used for linux operating systems, how do I connect to the net manually?
the modem is a smart ax

The only important file on that CD would be the connection drivers. I'm going to assume you've a USB modem? To run that modem you need drivers. Find the model/name of the hardware and go straight to their website - there should be a range of drivers there for various OS's. Simply install drivers and connect the usual way.
