I have just installed Linux Ubuntu on my PC and need some advice

I have a Geforce 6200SE Nvidea graphics card on my machine but the maximum resolution I can achieve on Ubuntu is 640 x 480 which makes the on screen graphics and text rather large looking and I need to scroll around to view a browser page.

Is there any way I can increase my screen resolution to something higher so I can have it like I do on XP?
I know this is a driver issue or installation of one but I am a novice on Ubuntu so your help would be appreciated if it was step by step.

2 Ways to install nvidia driver
1)get the nvidia propriety driver from nvidia website
you need the kernel sources and header get it thru synaptic
2)directly get it via synaptic

I'm running Ubuntu on my laptop at 1920 x 1200.

Are you completely up-to-date? I had a few problems with an older CD at one point but 8.04 LTS was fine for me.

Try System->Administration->Hardware Drivers

This should open up a dialogue which shows you available proprietary drivers. You may find that ticking a box in there helps. Then restart Ubuntu and go into System->Preferences->Screen Resolution and hopefully you'll have more options.
