Windows is the most popular desktop OS in business, however Linux server environments are gaining popularity specially Red Hat and Suse. The pull is that it is an enterprise solution that you can download for free. however most businesses pay for the OEM version.

"No, get windows."

Right.

First, Linux is incredibly popular - mostly for its 'for the users, by the users' approach to development and the fact that you can obtain a fully functioning copy for free. Depending on what you want to do with the operating system, you can find a distribution of Linux that fits your needs and makes your experience happy and easy to use. Some say it's better than Windows - it all depends.

Windows, on the other hand, is more popular strictly because it was first on the market as a mass-produced, user-friendly [at least, comparitively so, to other OS' at the time] operating system. Now you see it everywhere, and it's packed on nearly every PC you see for sale, today. If you ask me, the only OS packages that were worth the purchase that Microsoft ever put out were Windows XP Professional Edition and Windows 98 Second Edition. Everything else has been downright junk.

I use Windows XP Professional myself, and I've been in and out of tech support for years, and now I run my own independent tech support company. I leave the choice with you, though! Do a little Wikipedia look up, and other research! See what's best for you.
