Whether you had a formal tenancy agreement or not you had a tenancy. As such you are entitled to take with you any items which you own and which are not incorporated into the tenancy ( e.g fixtures and fittings) Equally you are obliged to leave the premise in the same state and condition as when you first took possession. You cannot tell from your story whether there was any agreement that the replacement carpet was to remain yours or become part of the fixtures and fittings. On balance my opinion would be that it was fixtures and fittings. But thats only my opinion.
Your £90 carpet is over 2 years old and however gorgeous is probably not worth a lot today (probably an end of roll or offcut when you got it) Second hand carpets rarely are. You can stick to your guns if you really feel you need to but don't forget if you are getting legal with your in laws their rights are to have the original brown(?) carpet or a suitable replaced at your cost.
