Default Dealing with the in-laws talking over me?

I actually quite like the in-laws and can sit and have a chat or whatever, but i'm noticing that i am being talked over a lot of the time and it is starting to upset me.

They are buying a new appartment and we all went to see a show home - a lot of the time i would start saying something to them and by the time i had finished the sentence they had walked off talking to each other.

I mentioned it to my fella and he played it down as you'd expect and finally came to the conclusion that i just talked too quietly.

We just went for a meal and i started to tell them about our new hobby, they both looked at me and then they started talking to each other.

It was so obvious even my fella noticed i'd been completely blanked. He whispered to me that i talked too quietly, but i pointed out i got their initial attention so he made a comment to them.

At the time i thought it was nice of him, but when we were alone again he was making excuses on their behalf...

It makes me feel like crap.

I experience this problem too amongst others - my husband tries to make excuses like they are just excited about what they are going on about but it does sometimes feel like i have nothing worth saying, which deep down i know isn't true as in my personal and professional life i am well liked and people enjoy my company. i think he tries to smooth things over between us as there is some conflict. i think what you have to remember that you married the man, not the family. a good relationship with the in laws is a bonus but not essential. good luck x

It's not you, it's them. My in-laws are like that. My fil especially is a very dominating person who loves the sound of his own voice. I used to try to participate in conversations, but gave up because when he does listen, he is only just waiting until you are finished so he can continue on listening to himself. People like that are not worth the effort even if they are your in-laws. They are only cheating themselves out of getting to know you. I'm sure you have friends and family who appreciate your intelligence.
