My parents in law have a dog (have had him a very long time now) and they work full time and obviously their dog is left in the house on its own. Usually though everyday they go home at lunch time and are at home for about an hour so their dog gets to have a run around in the garden etc.
That's all you can do really, i don't know what the law says though.
It rather varies depending on the breed and age of the dog and what facilities are available.
One friend never leaves her dog for more than 2 hours, another has a dog flap between the conservatory & the garden and makes sure they are never left more than 8 hours at a time.
One lady I know goes home from work every lunchtime and, if she is doing overtime, at tea time to walk hers.
