How do I get involved in Open Source Java projects? How good do you have...
...to be to get involved? Hi.
I'm a Computer Science student going into my second year at university. We did a bit of work with Java this year and I've enjoyed it, and most of us will graduate to be software engineers anyway, so I'm taking steps to make sure my CV looks good when I graduate. Since grades won't do it alone, I'm writing to companies for a year in industry and now I want to get involved in open source projects to show my ability. However, I have no idea where to start and am daunted by the prospect of being too much of a beginner for that world.
This isn't to say I'm a beginner - I've aced all the programming projects and I won a "prize" for the Software Engineering module. I don't doubt that I could probably complete most tasks given to me if I had time to research them and find out how to complete it and such. However, I'm guessing these kind of projects will expect me to write fast and effective code within a time limit? Or am I being over-paranoid about an area that is actually quite laid back?
Can anyone advise me on where to start, the ins and outs, experiences they've had, etc?
Thanks everyone.
