The area of Ayrshire is not near St Andrews golf course, so it's hard to know which area you're talking about.
EDIT: I expect there are hundreds of Golf Courses in Ayrshire - Turnberry and Troon are two of the more prestigious ones.
Yes it is a nice area, and it was fairly presitigious in Victorian times - there are many grand houses dating from that era. Nowadays it is not particularly expensive when compared to other areas in Scotland, particularly Glasgow and Edinburgh. Other areas in the UK which are known for their beauty would have to start with the Cotswolds and parts of the Lake District in England, and the Trossachs in Scotland, but of course there are many more.
