Thinking of buying a Golf Mk1 1990 (UK)?

Can anyone please advise

1. Is a 1.8 very fuel guzzling?

2. Its an Automatic - what is the reputation on a VW Golf Auto of this age? I've only ever had Fords before.

3. Its done 110,000 - does it have much life left in it - someone said they can typically go over 200,000 without issue!

1990 Golfs are getting on a bit & you should expect to spend some pounds on it at some stage. They are not like the beetle that go & go & go. The old 3 speed vee dub autos are quite strong.. I would be more worried with other little annoying things around it. Dont forget its 28 years old! Good luck

Excellent car, though getting on a bit. An auto 1.8 will not achieve much more than 28-30 mpg if you're lucky.
Mileage not a problem but check for service history.
Don't expect light steering, no power assistance.
SHOULD be quite rust free, these cars were built to last, if rusty, walk away there will be a better one. Budget on around £400 to £650 and you should get a very good car which will only appreciate in value.
