How popular is golf in Britain compared to the U.S.?

By that I mean how often does the average person play as well as watch it on t.v. and keep up with major tournaments, etc. Where I'm from it's very common for many (well men at least) to play at least once a week and keep up with major players but wasn't sure to what degree this was true elsewhere.

The people in Britain much prefer golf to the U.S.In fact,they tolerate golf but thet don't even like the U.S.

I think it is about the same. golf is very popular here (UK) not so many courses obviously cos we are quite a small island and weather not always great but still very popular.
