Yes, in england and other european countries they call it football. Americans and Canadians call it soccer because they already have a popular sport called football, which is very different than soccer. (you know the sport where you try to get a touch down??? I personally dont even know why they call it football since you use your hands, it should be called handball or something but anyway, basically Americans/Canadians already have a sport called football, which is why they call it soccer, which works out good so noone gets it confused. But in most parts of the world "soccer" is known as football. However, even though i am living in Canada right now i still call soccer "football" cuz i dont really follow american football.

And no i dont think you would ever catch an english person refering to it as soccer.

A few people in the US say footbal or futbol, mostly people who are into European or English football/soccer or who's parent, friends etc. are foreign will use football. If your not into European football/soccer then you NEVER say football. If you do say football when your talking to someone, you almost always have to explain you mean "soccer". "American football" is always just football. always. I call soccer football almost all the time. Whenever I talk about football/soccer that is going on in or related to Europe / foreign, I always say football. If Im talking about soccer / football in or related to the US, I'll say soccer.

Conclusion: Us yanks call football soccer!
(but I don't really consider myself a yank)

and in Ireland, sometimes people call it soccer because they have gaelic football, which is really popular, but mostly they call it football.
