The word soccer originated in London at Oxford University. English folk will never acknowledge this fact, but it's true. I personally don't care. I call it soccer in the US to avoid confusion but agree it should be called football.

Because in the US they play another game which they call football. If they referred to both games as football no one would know what they were talking about. And they were playing (American) football long before football(soccer) became popular.

i am from america and the reason is when people started playing football(english version) the americans decided to alter the game and change some rules to make it more interesting(in there oppinion) thus making american style football, but then the latin influence on america due largely from mexico-----americans acknowledged the sport the mexicans were playing as soccer-

thats why mexicans in america say futbol and soccer in english--- and just refer to american football as football.

i know it sounds confusing.

also the mls fans copy alot of the latin country futbol style crowds
drums, singing, whistles, streamers ect. ect.
unlike the european style croweds who just sit or stand and chant the team songs.

Americans are a confused bunch. For them, the term football means to wear padded shoulder guards and be able to handle the ball and run till caught. If you gonna go to the states and ask to play football, they will pick up the ball and throw it at you.
Football did come late to the good old US of A. So to cut the confliction, the Americans decided to call English football 'Soccer'.
