To what extent do fashion magazines contribute to modern society's notion...
...of the feminine ideal? I am undertaking a project in which the outcome will involve me constructing a women's fashion magazine that promotes a variety of body shapes, body sizes and a range of ethnicities.
I would like to know how much you think magazines themselves contribute to messages about such appearance; body shape/sizes and ethnicity?
Does it effect you? male or female
Do you accept of reject such messages?
Any other comments in regards to this issue are also welcome.
The standard character in a fashion magazine is white, absurdly thin, and vapid-looking. Does it affect me? Yes, it pisses me off. Do I accept or reject such messages? I reject them, obvs.
The reason behind these girls looking the way they do is because they are all used for advertising. They need to be thin and flawless so that girls aspire to be like them and will purchase the products that are advertised in attempts to be like them.
I'm not saying I agree with the concept but conventionally nobody aspires to be fat, have facial blemishes etc. That is why the girls are airbrushed to perfection.
As for different ethnicities I feel that most models are white because western society is predominantly white and there need to be something that consumers identify with. However, western society is becoming increasingly diverse and so I do think there needs to be a wider range of ethnicities being represented.
magazines are also a form of media influencing our scociety. When it comes to fashion there a lot of women especially teens that are influenced by magazines.
