Default Why do priests etc wear such ornate clothes? Jesus wouldn't have done so.?

There is no record of the Apostles putting on special robes in the Christian ecclesias (churches). Special robes were worn in the Temple and Tabernacle of the Jewish people.

The Catholic Church adopted many of the rituals and practices of the earlier pagan beliefs. Co-opting the holidays like Easter (Eostre and a fertility celebration), Christmas (Yule), replacing priests of earlier religions with their own, creating new iconography all helped drive Christianity throughout the Roman empire.

To strike awe and fear into the populace, very much the same as early Royalty did or still do, check out some of the Royal male (NO not royal mail, stop the jokes) uniforms, braid, gongs and all that cr4p. Check out King Henry VIII and Francis I of France at the Field of Gold ALL for show and bragging rights.

Because all faiths are the creation of our species. We love ceremony and leaders. Much of the reason as to why any faith manages to propagate.

Some may be ornate, but they're the same year after year.

You are correct, neither Jesus nor the Apostles wore special robes...the ornamental clothing came later, adapted from the clothing worn by roman every day. For instance, the chausible probably came from the poncho romans wore while traveling. But the development was slow, it took several hundred years. The theology that made it NECESSARY for the Temple Priests to wear ornamental robes is the theology that made it seem desireable that the Christian priests also do so. The ornamentation is different in each particular church...the orthodox Churches reflect the influences of their individual nations and the Latin Rite of the Catholic Church reflects the influence of the romans.

The priests wear these clothing because of the sacred nature of the rites they enact...it seemed desirable to seperate these acts from the daily routine of life. Just as when we go to a graduation or a wedding etc we don't wear our daily street clothes, so it was with the Church.

Priests, reverands, pastors, all wear "clerical" garments.

You are correct, it is not what Christ called men to do, especially in light of what he said in Matthew 23.

I suppose that those who wear such robes are trying to seperate themselves in some manner from the "liety", the common man, to appears especially holy.
