Are there any genuine free web hosting sites?

I don't want to pay for a domain or registration or anything. I just want somewhere I can play around and upload some html (without their ads).

Please, no replies saying free hosting is unreliable. I just need the name of a free (and ad free) host. I don't have an ISP so can't use my 'home page'

Well free webhosting is not recommended because once the bandwidth gets over people can not visit your website .I use Hostmonster webhosting for mine

well there are sites where you can get the domain for free.these do not give hosting but only redirect them to your page.
domains like .nr and .tk are easily available from
www.dot.com etc..I have mine the same way!!

I use this site, you can get a free subdomain which means it will have award space in the www.address, but like you said you probably know its not going to be reliable, on mine the last page never works unless you go to it first, but other than that its fine.

Be carefull when signing up to check all the boxes that you are going for the free option.
