Default Why is it that if you call a usa call centre IN the USA, THEY DONT SPEAK ENGLISH?

i dont mean to be a bitch and i am all for immigration, BUT if you immigrate somewhere, go somewhere you know the language, or LEARN it before WORKING IN A CALL CENTRE?? or work in the SPANISH SEGMENT of the call centre?? you know the one, "PUSH TWO IF YOU WANT TO SPEAK SPANISH" not the "Push ONE if you want to speak ENGLISH" SHEESH. isnt it COMMON COURTESY?
why do companies think we want to "do business" with people that DONT UNDERSTAND WHAT WE ARE SAYING? especially OVER the PHONE when you cant even use sign language or draw??
this woman could only talk to me in SPANISH even though i "pushed one because i wanted to speak English/American"
i PUSHED THE FOOKING "ONE" TO SPEAK ENGLISH SHE STILL SPOKE SPANISH CANT YOU READ?
Do you know how HARD IT IS TO GET A JOB WITH A HARVARD PhD? They probably work in call centres TOO! and at Starbucks.
no matter how little education you have, if you live in a country AND get a job in the "push one to speak English" section of a call centre one should speak fooking English or not do customer service jobs...

Welcome to modern life! What you are experiencing is the result of learning that whoever you do business with, you better have the means to communicate with your clients. Spanish speakers comprise a significant amount of clients. The bottom line is, to economically survive, you better be competitive and know what your clients want and be able to communicate with them ... then provide what they want for them or someone else will. I personally don't find it that hard to push one.

As another responder (from the UK) said, they are based in India. Many American ones are as well.

Also though, US based ones are not getting Harvard PhD's in there to answer phone calls. These are mostly minimum wage jobs, often staffed by minimally educated folks.

This is because the call centres are NOT IN THE USA, they are in MEXICO!! Here in the UK we have the same problem; if you ring a call centre they are all in India.

Those who have followed my posts will know that I hold particularly liberal views regarding the use of Spanish in the USA. But I do agree that this situation is ludicrous. How on earth do businesses think they will win customers' goodwill if, when you ring their number, you cannot converse with their staff?

Whoever it is I ring, be it my bank, a business, a utility company or a government department, I always INSIST on being connected to the UK office I want to do business with, or I terminate my call. If necessary,I then write to the body concerned telling them EITHER to give me a telephone number I can ring at their office OR to get lost. That usually does the trick.

Yes annoying. Most of the call centres in the UK are based in India and I cannot understand what they are saying as they have very strong Indian accent.
I can't understand how they could be of much help if our query is about a problem product in the UK and they are in India!!

At least over there the call centres are actually in the same country.
Over here in the UK they are using call centres not only in another country but in another continent !!
Try that for frustration !

Depending on what type of call center you are calling, but most are now being sent to India. I agree, I hate it when I can't understand the person I'm trying to get help from. It frustrates me to no end.

Also just just found out that most of the online tax preparers are actually companies in India.

The woman you talked too, was probably in the wrong que. Hopefully the company figured it out. That had to be a phone mix up
