Default my PC has slowed right down and the C drive light flickers a lot?

My Windows Vista PC has suddenly decided to go slow... It is a good spec 2GB, with Kaspersky anti-virus. And I keep it as lean and mean and clean as I can. It generally goes ok.
Suddenly on Thursday, it started going really slowly, without me having changed anything - apart from downloading yet another of those infernal Windows Updates. It was a particularly big Update and involved re-booting the PC (which is unusual).
Since then, it hasn't worked properly.
I have tried doing a restore back to before the Windows Update, but it hasn't helped.
I have done a full scan using Kaspersky, I have run CCleaner (which true to its name, did actually find loads of crap. I have done all the usual things that might speed up the PC. I have even turned off the indexing feature. But it's really not helping.
The weird thing is: the hard drive light keeps flickering - not much, every second or so, just a light flicker, like something is going on the background - but I can't see it anywhere. It even happens when I turn off ALL applications.
Can anyone suggest anything please?

Also, do Mac suffer these same irritating, ongoing problems that we all seem to have with PC? Or am I deluding myself that if I simply shell out on a Mac, I will have a nice, relaxing computer experience?! :-)

the symptoms seem to indicate a virus. With windows, frequent reformatting seems necessary. Why don't you try Linux. Try out ubuntu, it's good for a beginner. Quite user friendly. 0 viruses and quite stable. You just need to get used to it, that's all. They're releasing a new version in October.
