Default can any 1 tell me if on a 2.25 landrover diesel engine o.h.v NOT O.H.C ?

if the engine is turned with the head removed would this upset the timing. I have just replaced the head gasket and now the engine wont rev properly and it blows grey smoke but on tick over the smoke is sort of blue and it has no power but starts better than it has ever done any advise appreciated thanks ( 2.25 series11a land rover 1969)

HI
If you didn't remove the distributor the it should be Ok...If you had to remove the distributor then yes it well move the timing. Move the motor my hand to where the timing is on O* or TDC. then pull the distributor cap and see if it is pointing at the #1 plug wire or it may be pointing 180* off which is ok to as TDC comes up twice on a motor once for 1# firing and once for #1's exhaust stroke. If you rotate the motor again is should be pointing at the #1 wire in the cap.
Also you may have a plug wire out of rotation.. find the firring order and rotation of the distributor and see if you are ok there.
Good luck
Tim

It wont upset the timing as its an OHV motor running push rods . As to the gray smoke is it gray or is it steam ?? .
your fuel pump timing could be out . but if all you have done is remove the head and not touched anything else then its not that ( unless it was doing that in the first place .

Re check your tappet clearances

Adjust the tappet clearances for petrol and diesel
engines, inlet and exhaust to 0,25 mm (0.010 in)

Set No. 1 tappet with No. 8 valve fully open.
Set No. 3 tappet with No. 6 valve fully open.
Set No. 5 tappet with No. 4 valve fully open.
Set No. 2 tappet with No. 7 valve fully open.
Set No. 8 tappet with No. 1 valve fully open.
Set No. 6 tappet with No. 3 valve fully open.
Set No. 4 tappet with No. 5 valve fully open.
Set No. 7 tappet with No. 2 valve fully open.

try that first

Start by checking the valve clearances. If there ok? then then diesel pump timing is out? The injection pump will need to be slackened and the pump timing altered.Mark the existing setting with typist fluid so you can get back to your original settings, then move the pump slightly and start it to see if it gets better or worse? Not the exact way to do it but it does work.Hope this helps.PS its OHV

Hi .no turning the eng with head off will not affect the timing ,as far as the grey smoke i wonder if it is water ,those cylinder heads worpe a lot and you can buy different thickness of head gaskets ,but ther could still be air in the fuel system try bleeding with eng running .
good luck h
